EV Biotech is a biotechnology company that creates microbial production platforms for high-value chemicals and proteins using computational modelling and microorganisms. By combining classical fermentation methods with the latest developments in modelling approaches we have revolutionised the methods of microbial strain engineering. Our microbial cells factories (MCFs) provide effective, bio-based alternatives to conventional chemical-synthetic production processes. Our Groningen-based team has been operational since July 2018 and is dedicated to EV’s mission to evolve the chemical feedstock market by shifting it from petrochemical-based to bio-based chemical production, thereby creating a greener economy for all.
We are looking for a Strain Engineer to strengthen our Tech team (40 h per week).
Scope of the position:
In this position, you will be responsible for the development, testing and optimisation of the model organisms to produce a specific compound in the laboratory. Generated experimental data will be reported back to the Dry Lab (modelling team) for Wet Lab/Dry Lab data integration.
Design genetic constructs and metabolic pathways;
Set up and perform the experiments and new assays in the laboratory;
Be responsible for lab organisation and administration, including ordering and lab equipment maintenance, and lab safety;
Daily supervision of student interns who are working in the lab;
Ensure strain development milestones are reached on time;
Aid in the development of the EV pipeline;
Spar with the Dry Lab about new tech developments for strain engineering;
Have an advisory role regarding patents and IP (after training);
Be project leader of two projects, in which you are responsible for the planning, progress and delivering the milestones.
PhD in Biotechnology or Molecular Cell Biology;
Preferably some experience in industry;
Strong background in strain engineering (metabolic engineering, genetic engineering, strain engineering for in vivo biocatalysis);
Experience with multiple host systems;
Experience with transcriptomics is a plus;
Experience with running fermenters is a plus;
Experience with patents is a plus;
Good interpersonal and management skills to communicate effectively within the team;
Excellent communication and presentation skills;
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
