EV Biotech is a biotechnology company that creates microbial production platforms for high-value chemicals and proteins using computational modelling and microorganisms. By combining classical fermentation methods with the latest developments in modelling approaches we have revolutionised the methods of microbial strain engineering. Our microbial cells factories (MCFs) provide effective, bio-based alternatives to conventional chemical-synthetic production processes. Our Groningen-based team has been operational since July 2018 and is dedicated to EV’s mission to evolve the chemical feedstock market by shifting it from petrochemical-based to bio-based chemical production, thereby creating a greener economy for all.
We are looking for a Fermentation Scientist / Analyst to strengthen our Wet Lab team (40 h per week).
Scope of the position:
In developing microbial cell factories, it is important to keep the final goal in focus. In this position, you will provide industrial fermentation insight throughout the entire strain design and development process and prepare for, oversee, and bear responsibility for the upscaling of EV’s proof-of-concept and on-demand MCF strains. You are expected to design, set up, and perform experiments to improve product yield, from lab and pilot scale to industrial production scale for on-demand client support. You will also provide insights on strain design choices in the lab-development phase such that the final product is industrially viable.
- Set up and operate lab- and pilot-scale production fermenters;
Lead scale-up of MCF strains;
Lead technology transfer to clients;
Use technical knowledge to identify, troubleshoot, and assist with the resolution of fermentation process problems;
Document experimental execution and report data to Dry Lab for data integration;
Be responsible for reaching fermentation milestones on time;
Perform maintenance tasks for lab-scale fermentation equipment;
Write documentation including project reports and SOPs;
Be responsible for laboratory safety incl. GMO waste;
Supervise student interns;
Aid in development of the EV pipeline.
- BSc or MSc in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related engineering or life science discipline;
At least six (or four for MSc) years of experience with lab- and pilot-scale fermentation;
Experience with industrial-scale fermentation is a plus;
Experience with leading fermentation upscaling processes is a plus;
Excellent interpersonal and management skills to communicate effectively within the team and with customers;
Excellent communication and presentation skills;
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
